Obstructive Sleep Apnea Surgery
Is sleep apnea surgery right for you?
Sleep Study
Conducted with a sleep physician, a sleep study assesses sleep patterns and apnea severity. This is an essential first step before surgery for Dr. Charugundla's patients.
CT Scan & Physical Assessment
Dr. Charugundla will talk to you about your symptoms and use an in-office CT to access airway structures like your nose, jaw, tongue, and throat.
Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE)
In some cases, Dr. Charugundla will use light sedation and a fiber optic camera to replicate sleep conditions and provide additional clarity on the cause of obstruction.
Surgical Treatments
Dr. Charugundla provides tailored surgical solutions for airway obstructions, supported by integrative pre- and post-operative therapies.
Maxillomandibular Advancement (Jaw Surgery):
Moves the upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jaws, enlarging the airway and reducing the obstruction. Repositioning the jaws also moves the surrounding soft tissues increasing airway space.
Laser or Cautery-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (UPP):
Removes excess throat tissue to widen the airway.
Nasal Surgery (Turbinoplasty or Septoplasty):
Nasal turbinates are curved, bony structures inside the nose that help clean and humidify the air you breathe. Reshaping these nasal turbinates and resolving deviated septums can help resolve obstructions.
Partial Glossectomy (Tongue Surgery):
Patients with an enlarged tongue can benefit from tongue reduction surgery for sleep apnea in addition to myofunctional therapy to improve tongue muscle tone which reduces tongue size.
Genioglossus Advancement:
Repositions the tongue’s base to increase airway space by moving the genioglossus muscle (the main tongue muscle).
Why is jaw surgery for sleep apnea so effective?
Jaw surgery, specifically Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA) surgery, is consistently shown to be the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. By repositioning the jawbones, it opens the airway and naturally adjusts the surrounding tissues.
